内容記述
内容記述 Community currencies have been utilized across local communities for more than 20 years in Japan. The number of community currencies, which was only a few in 1999, was 668 in December 2021, with 183 in operation. The current 2021 survey of Japanese community currencies in operation, which is the 16th survey since its inception in 1999, shows several findings. The first is the change in community currency issuers. Until 2008, civic groups and nonprofit organizations accounted for approximately 70% of the total, but in recent years, that percentage has declined significantly to approximately 50%. The second is the change in duration of operation. During the developmental period from 2001 to 2007, when the community currency boom emerged, approximately 40% of the community currencies ceased their activities after two years, and approximately half ceased their activities after four years. However, in 2016 and 2017, which were in the maturity period when operations were gradually declining, 35% and 15% of the community currencies were discontinued within four years of launch, respectively. This suggests that the sustainability of community currencies may have improved slightly in recent years. Third, in 2020, when the global spread of COVID-19 began, Japan's community currencies entered a new phase, the era of digital community currencies. Although not yet a majority, the number of digital community currencies in operation was 26 in 2020 and 35 in 2021, and most of the new community currencies are adopting digital community currency types.
