日用品・化粧品業界のメーカーが協力し合って設立した業界VANプラネットは、日本の流通情報システムの発達の一部を体現するシステムといえる。本稿では、事例研究として、1980年代後半にプラネットがどのような状況でつくられたのか、その基本的な仕組みはどのようなものだったのか。また、EOSからEDIの発展の中で、プラネットがどのようなサービスを開発し、実際にどのように日用品・化粧品業界で受け入れられてきたのかを説明する。

Planet, Value Added Network (VAN) in grocery and cosmetic industry in Japan, was established on the cooperation among manufacturers in 1985. Planet exemplifies the development of Electronic Ordering System (EOS), Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), and Supply Chain Management (SCM) in the industry. This paper examines the development of planet's VAN system by asking for questions : in what circumstances this network was formed in the late 80s, what was the basic characteristic of this system firsthand, what kind of services it has facilitated and how it has been widely accepted in the evolution scenario from EOS to next generation EDI.
